Bankruptcies and hearings on compositions without bankruptcies 2017

In 2017 the district courts decided 6,714 cases of bankruptcy, of which 6,394 concerned companies (including private business owners), 118 concerned private individuals and 202 concerned the estates of deceased persons.

The number of company bankruptcies rose by 6 per cent compared to 2016. The number of employees affected by bankruptcy was 17,485, which meant a rise of 7 per cent compared to 2016. Unless otherwise specified, the comparisons given below refer to 2016.

The number of hearings on compositions without bankruptcies during the year was 151 compared to 182 in 2016. The number of employees in these companies was 3,360 compared to 8,186 in 2016.

The number of bankruptcies rose by 5 per cent for limited liability companies and by 20 per cent for private businesses owners. The number of bankruptcies in partnerships etc.¹ rose by 6 per cent.

In the manufacturing sector the number of companies declaring bankruptcy amounted to 326, which meant a fall of 7 per cent. In the construction sector the number of companies declaring bankruptcy rose by 16 per cent to 1,240.

In the trade sector the number of companies declaring bankruptcy rose by 10 per cent to 1,468. In the hotel and restaurant sector the number of companies declaring bankruptcy amounted to 517, a rise of 21 per cent. In the transport and communications sector the number of companies declaring bankruptcy rose by 7 per cent and amounted to 580 in 2017. In financial, property and corporate services the number of companies declaring bankruptcy fell by 4 per cent to 1,218. In the group including civil authorities, educational institutions and other services, the number of bankruptcies rose by 23 per cent, which meant that 478 companies declared bankruptcy in 2017.

In 2017 the number of companies in Stockholm County declaring bankruptcy was 2,161 (+3 per cent), in Västra Götaland County the number of companies was 864 (-2 per cent) and in Skåne County it was 982 (+19 per cent).

Seen in terms of sector size, the most significant rises were by 30 per cent and 26 per cent in the construction and trade sectors respectively in Skåne County. The number of employees affected by bankruptcy in general was, however, as good as unchanged in Skåne County: 2,287 employees compared to 2,311 employees in 2016.

In Västmanland County 149 companies declared bankruptcy compared to 91, a rise of 64 per cent. There was a rise in bankruptcies in the construction and transport and communications sectors in particular. The number of employees affected by bankruptcy in Västmanland County amounted to 879 compared to 208. The number of bankruptcies in Västmanland County rose in 2015 to 123 companies and in 2014 to 154 companies.

In the counties of Dalarna and Gävleborg the number of bankruptcies rose by 31 per cent. In Dalarna County there was a rise in bankruptcies in the transport and communications sector and in financial, property and company services, while the single biggest rise in Gävleborg County was in the trade sector.

The single biggest fall in the number of company bankruptcies in terms of distribution by county was in Värmland County, which was 21 per cent. The most notable fall in bankruptcies was in the trade sector. Other counties which saw a fall in the number of bankruptcies were Kalmar County and Halland County, in both cases by 11 per cent.
