In 2017 there were 3,199 Swedish controlled enterprise groups with affiliates abroad, a decrease of 15 groups since 2016. Of these enterprise groups 960 or 30 per cent had subsidiaries in Norway. Between 18 and 20 per cent of the enterprise groups had subsidiaries established in Finland, Denmark and USA.

The number of employees in the Swedish controlled enterprise groups with affiliates abroad amounted to over 2 million, an increase of 3 per cent over the preceding year. The number of employees abroad increased by 36,471to 1,455,967 and the number in Sweden increased by 15,292 to 588,819 employees.

The largest increases in individual countries took place in the US where the number of employees in the Swedish controlled groups increased by 1,725 and in Germany, where the number of employees increased by 7,918. Swedish controlled enterprise groups decreased their number of employees in a few countries, in Denmark their number of employees decreased by 6,543 and in Latvia by 4 785 employees. The countries where Swedish enterprise groups had their largest number of employees were US with 232,216, China with 105,541 and Germany with 101,120 employees.

The majority of employees abroad were in groups with at least 5,000 employees in Sweden. The 25 enterprise groups with at least 5,000 employees in Sweden accounted for about 51 per cent of all employees in foreign countries, and 41 per cent of employees in Sweden.

The total turnover for the Swedish groups with affiliates abroad accounted to 5,497 billion for year 2017. Abroad the total turnover was 3,324 billion and the total turnover in Sweden was 2,371 billion. That was an increase of 3 per cent abroad and a decrease of 8 per cent in Sweden over the preceding year.
